THE OKE-OGUN POLYTECHNIC, SAKI (TOPS)

When you think of a citadel of higher learning where you don’t just get the value of your tuition fees but get more value in knowledge, excellence and entrepreneurship, you think of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki (TOPS). This is unequivocally one of the best and fastest growing state owned polytechnic, not just in the South West but in the whole of Nigeria.

This journey of excellence began in 1981 with an amendment to the principal Edict of The Polytechnic, Ibadan which created four satellite campuses for The Polytechnic, Ibadan in Eruwa, Iree, Esa-Oke and Saki.  However, with the creation of the Osun State, the Iree and Esa-Oke became properties of the new state and later in 2014, the satellite campuses in Eruwa and Saki became autonomous and this led to the creation of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki and The Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa.

The primary function of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki (TOPS) is to provide for students, technical, vocational, science, engineering, environmental science and business education. The institution provides an innovative learning and ground breaking research environment for its students and staff members and this account for its academic cum technical excellence track records.

The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki is a home of disciplined students, committed staff, formidable and visionary management led by an outstanding Rector, Matthew Olaniyi Oladeji whose sterling leadership charisma and optimistic courage has been a driven force that has brought this institution to limelight even within the shortest period of its autonomy from the erstwhile Principal, The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Some of the recent infrastructural developments in the institution including New School of Environmental Studies block (1), School of Science (2), ICT Centre (3) and Ultra-modern Library building (4).

The institution offers a wide range of courses under a total of five Schools-School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Environmental Studies; School of Financial Management Studies and School of Business and Communication Studies for the purpose of improving the technical and vocational capabilities of its teeming students. It prides itself on providing an opportunity for presenting the most recent advances in knowledge and techniques to its students. Virtually all the courses offered in the institution are fully accredited and running in the National Diploma, Higher National Diploma and the post-Graduate Diploma levels.

The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki awards the National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) and other professional certificates to its graduates.

Its academic landmark aside, the institution within its short period of existence boasts of aesthetic cum academic-friendly environment with magnificent lecture halls, state of the art fully equipped e-library (ICT Centre) and print library, functional Wifi system, faculty buildings, fully equipped laboratories and other numerous infrastructures. A proposed staff and students’ residence and Micro-Finance Bank is in the pipeline and would soon kick off to offer proper accommodation to staff and students respectively.

The institution also allows for social, cultural and sporting activities as a way of encouraging relaxation while learning and in these areas, our students have been successful especially in the area of sports as the institution have enlisted and participated in WAPOGA in the last edition in Accra, Ghana. The institution also hosted the Oyo State Tertiary Institutions Games (OYSTIGA) where it won the only trophy presented for football and some gold and silver medals for other games. The institution is also enlisted in this year’s NIPOGA Games.

Saying that The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki is the ideal institution of higher learning for enthusiastic students and staff is stating the obvious.  COMMISSIONING OF TOPS ICT CENTRE BY THE MINISTER OF COMMUNICATION

The newly constructed ICT Centre for The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki (TOPS) has been commissioned recently by the Minister of Communication, Barr. Adebayo Shittu.

During the commissioning, the minister who incidentally hailed from Saki, admonished the students and staff of the polytechnic to take advantage of the centre and urged the TOPS Management to maximally utilize the commercial value of the ICT centre.  He thanked the school management and others who have contributed in one way or the other to the rapid development of the institution and urged them to continue in their efforts to ensure that the institution is at the top as the name implies.

Earlier, the Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof. Olowofela said he was committed to education and has love for all citizens of Oyo State and the South West in general. The governor noted that Oyo State is lucky to have the likes of the Honourable Minister of Communication, Barr. Adebayo Shittu.

Ajimobi who noted that the information and communication technology sector is another important sector of the economy which could provide better opportunities called on the Communications Minister to ensure the resuscitation of the Oodua Tel in the state which has gone moribund over the years.

The governor maintained the stance of his government to improve education in the state and this, he said, has led his government to create school boards in every secondary institution in the state to help improve the educational system in the state.

In his welcome address, the Rector of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Mr. Matthew Olaniyi Oladeji said the people of Saki and The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki are indeed grateful to Barr. Adebayo Shittu for influencing the construction of 150 capacity ICT in TOPS noting that this will go a long way in solving information technology related problems in Saki.

Mr. Oladeji noted that the project provides opportunity of writing UTME to JAMB candidates who are domiciled in Saki. He noted that after the completion of the project by the Federal Ministry of Education, TOPS Management discovered that for it to be used as JAMB Centre for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), TOPS must provide a number of facilities which were conspicuously missing in the project.

Such facilities according to the Rector included a 110 KVA Generator and Generator House, an additional 125 computer sets and accessories, 6 Air Conditioners (standing and split), additional networking materials to make up for 275 computer sets; cubicles for the furniture, CCTV materials, monitor for the server room and earthing and thunder arrestor for the gadgets. “With provision of these items, JAMB has given approval to TOPS for the 2017 UTME”, he said.

The Rector seized the opportunity to appreciate Mr. Niyi Otunla who used his personality to influence funds for the construction of ultra-modern library, faculty of science building; faculty of environmental studies building and 500 capacity lecture theatre. He also appreciated the National Association of Saki Elites (NASE) and the Saki Parapo for initiating a 200 capacity ICT Centre and called on NASE, Saki Parapo and illustrious indigenes of Saki to rise up to the challenge of completion of the project.

Speaking at the ceremony, the National Chairman of the National Association of Saki Elites, Mr. Wole Oladokun who was represented by the Saki Chairman NASE; Deacon Segun Olujimi said the Saki people owes a great gratitude to three governors of Oyo State. The governors according to him were the late Chief Bola Ige who approved the siting of a Campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan in Saki, Governor Lam Adesina who approved 25% budget of The Polytechnic, Ibadan for the Saki Campus and of course Governor Abiola Ajimobi who established the Saki Campus into a full-fledged autonomous polytechnic,  The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki.

He described the 200 capacity ICT centre which is still under construction in TOPS as the brain child of NASE and the Saki Parapo and thanked the staff members of TOPS for their contribution towards the project.

Mr. Oladokun noted that out of about N9 million spent for the project so far, TOPS staff contributed about N6 million. He therefore called on the government to assist more in the payment of staff salary noting that the Saki people would also benefit from such gesture.

In a similar vein, the President of the Saki Parapo, Chief Sam Onifade described Barr. Adebayo Shittu as a man of his words and thanked him for his contribution towards the building of the ICT centre. In the same vein, the Emeritus Professor Dibu Ojerinde thanked the Honourable Minister for his stewardship and called for more support to attract the dividends of democracy to the state in general and Saki in particular.

The Bagi of Saki land, Alhaji Adegoke Ghazaal Abdul-Rasheed and other crème de la crèmes in Saki and Oyo State in general were in attendance at the commissioning ceremony.
